Montpelier Old Growth Cypress Shingles

Tidewater Red Cypress shingles for Montpelier, home of fourth U.S. President James Madison. Divers retrieve ancient Tidewater Red Cypress trees from their watery graves in the swamps and waterways of the U.S. Southeast, where they may have lain for centuries as this wood does not rot. E.T. Moore supplied this wood for the renovation of the roof of this historic home. These shingles were individually crafted, hand split, and rounded on the bottom with hatchet, one by one. The fantail hips and valley, some with beveled shingles where they lap, were also hand fashioned.
